Headquarters, 24th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (January 10, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Sergeant Robert H. Luhrsen (ASN: 36697313), United States Army, for heroism while serving with 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action at Zentsuji, Shikoku, Japan, on 7 December 1945. At approximately 0330 a fire broke out in the barracks in which First Sergeant Luhrsen was sleeping. First Sergeant Luhrsen, with full knowledge of the great risk he was taking, unhesitatingly entered the quarters and awakened a number of men who were sleeping and helped them to safety. While engaged in this heroic task, the stairs gave way under him causing him to suffer second degree burns. By his coolness, quick thinking, and utter disregard for his own safety in saving the lives of his comrades, First Sergeant Luhrsen upholds the highest traditions of the military service and his actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
