Headquarters, 24th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (January 10, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Private John Brackett (ASN: 44060147), United States Army, for heroism while serving with 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action at Zentsuji, Shikoku, Japan, on 7 December 1945. At approximately 0330 a fire broke out in one of the Company’s barracks at Zentsuji, Shikoku, Japan. Private Brackett was the first one in his room to awaken. After awakening the rest of the occupants in the room, he left the room to aid the other men in the building. He would have escaped the fire if he had not stayed to help others in the building. Private Brackett’s utter disregard or his own personal safety, his coolness and presence of mind undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades, and reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the military service.
