The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Hoadly G. Ryan (ASN: 0-1054387), United States Army, for heroism at Lipa Airstrip, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 12 August 1945, while serving with the 11th Airborne Division. Fist Lieutenant Ryan was a passenger in a B-24 bomber which crashed in an attempted take-off and immediately burst into flame. With utter disregard for his life and safety, or concern for his own injuries, he extricated a seriously injured crew member who was pinned down by the wreckage. He returned to the flaming plane twice to help remove two unconscious and critical injures soldiers. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by First Lieutenant Ryan reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
