The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Charles W. Dungan (ASN: 33707775), United States Army, for heroism in the vicinity of Cayugan, Isabella Province, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 17 June 1945. While swimming across the Cogayan River a soldier became exhausted while swimming near the middle of the river. Sergeant Dungan, who saw the man struggling, immediately swam to his aid and brought him safely to shore. Sergeant Dungan’s unselfish act undoubtedly save the life of the exhausted man. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Dungan reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
