The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] John H. Mode (ASN: 34776733), United States Army, for heroism near Lipa, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 August 1945. When a member of his company was savagely attacked and severely injured by a wild, charging bull, Staff Sergeant Mode clubbed the beast with his rifle and thus diverted the animal’s attention from the victim. As a result of this distraction, other comrades were able to remove the injured man to safety. Although Staff Sergeant Mode was completely exhausted after he had driven the animal away, he returned to help administer aid to the injured man. Staff Sergeant Mode’s great courage and utter disregard for his own personal safety exemplifies the highest traditions of the United States Army.
