The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) William A. Beatty, Jr. (ASN: 0-417121), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Medical Officer with the 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 March 1945. Captain Beatty, without regard for his safety, moved forward in the face of intense hostile fire and administered first aid to four wounded soldiers. Although advised that he would be unable to reach a fifth soldier who lay wounded in an exposed forward area that was under concentrated enemy fire, Captain Beatty crawled over the fire swept terrain and succeeded in making his way to the wounded man’s position. This courageous officer then remained with the wounded soldier administering medical treatment for three hours, at which time help arrived and the soldier was evacuated. Such an outstanding display of courage and loyalty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
