The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Dudney, Jr., United States Army, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2011, after a hijacked airline flight was used by international terrorists as a weapon to attack The Pentagon. Without regard for his own life, Lieutenant Colonel Dudney went to the rescue of the civilian office secretary and assisted in rescuing a female contractor. After seeing them to safety, he stayed in the smoke and fume filled building searching or others until he was reassured by the senior officer that everyone in the office was accounted for and safe. Once clear of the building and despite his injuries, Lieutenant Colonel Dudney volunteered as a litter team member to reenter the building to rescue additional people. His unyielding devotion to fellow soldiers and civilians undoubtedly saved lives and was an inspiration to all assisting to this tragedy. Lieutenant Colonel Dudney’s valor and professionalism in the face of extreme adversity are a testament to his personal courage and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
