The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Captain Michael D. Mullan, United States Army Reserve, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, as a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department, while responding to the emergency fire and explosions at the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. Captain Mullan immediately began search and rescue efforts, assisting victims of the disaster to safety while working through deadly smoke an chaos. Receiving a “mayday” call from a fellow firefighter, and despite imminent danger to himself, he left the protection of a stairwell to attempt to locate his comrade. He yelled to his co-workers that he would be right back. Immediately upon leaving the stairwell, the 110-story building collapsed, burying him in the wreckage. His courage, valiant dedication to service and heroic fulfillment of his duties as a soldier, nurse, and firefighter are an inspiration to all who knew him and to those who witnessed his bravery. Captain Mullan’s devotion to service and to the people of America resulted in his making the ultimate sacrifice and is testament to his bravery, reflecting great credit upon himself, the United States Army Reserve, the United States Army, and the United States of America.
