The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Captain Mark P. Whitford, United States Army Reserve, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, as a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department during a vicious and savage attack on the Untied States by terrorist forces. Captain Whitford was working in the Fire Department Engine Company 34 in Manhattan, when two aircraft deliberately crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. As one of the first firefighters on the scene, he heroically charged into the burning skyscraper, evacuating civilians and attempting to put out the ensuing blaze. As Captain Whitford risked his life rescuing countless people from the burning building, the 110-story building collapsed around him, burying him in the wreckage. His courage, valiant dedication to service, and heroic fulfillment of his duties as an Officer and Firefighter are an inspiration to all Americans. Captain Whitford’s devotion to service and to the people of America resulted in his making the ultimate sacrifice and is a testament to his bravery, reflecting great credit upon himself, the Untied States Army Reserve, the United States Army, and the United States of America.
