Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2839 (March 25, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Fourth Class Alex Alexandrou (ASN: RA-12770642), United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force while serving with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 31 January 1968. On this date, Specialist Fourth Class Alexandrou was serving as a Medical Aidman. At approximately 0430 hours, the vehicle that he was riding on entered a South Vietnamese Army compound located in the Province of Ben Cat which had been overrun by a battalion sized Viet Cong force. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Alexandrou immediately leaped from the vehicle as it entered the compound and rushed to several other vehicles to administer aid to the wounded. Braving intensive hostile mortar and rocket fire, he dauntlessly remained in the open and continued to treat the casualties until the main Viet Cong force renewed its fierce attack. He then took charge of the local women and children and as the insurgents attacked again, he picked up a Vietnamese soldier’s weapon and placed deadly accurate fire upon the charging enemy. His exemplary courage and bold determination were responsible for the saving of numerous friendly lives and contributed significantly to the defeat of the enemy force. Specialist Fourth Class Alexandrou’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
