The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lewis C. Dunsmore, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 49th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hoengsong, Korea on 12 February 1951. On this date, Dunsmore was serving as a one-quarter-ton truck driver on a motor march from Osan-ni to Wonju, when the convoy was ambushed as it entered Hoengsong. Seeing an injured comrade pinned beneath the wheels of a wrecked vehicle, Private Dunsmore voluntarily and (illegible), left his sheltered position and moved through withering small arms, grenade and mortar fire to his own vehicle. He then pushed the wrecked Jeep far enough to allow his comrades to remove the injured man. In the accomplishment of this mission, Private Dunsmore himself was wounded. His courageous and gallant action on this occasion, at the risk of his own life, reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
