The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jesse C. Goodman, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 7th Reconnaissance Company, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hoengsong, Korea, on 12 February 1951. On this date, Sergeant Goodman, a tank crew member, was in a convoy with elements of the division attempting to escape entrapment by numerically superior enemy forces. As the convoy moved into the town of Hoengsong, elements of the company were taken under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire from a roadblock ambush, and the vehicle in which Sergeant Goodman was riding was disabled. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Goodman seized a light machine gun and, with complete disregard for the intense enemy fire, exposed himself continuously by calmly moving forward along the column, firing his weapon from the hip. His accurate and deadly fire into enemy positions along the road ditch was responsible for allowing the halted column to continue forward to the eventual safety of friendly lines. Sergeant Goodman repeated this action on four occasions and as the vehicles cleared the final roadblock, he remained at the rear of the column covering the withdrawal until wounded by enemy fire. Sergeant Goodman’s gallant actions on this occasion reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
