The Secretary of the Army of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Army Commendation Medal with Combat “V” to Private First Class Robert Shannon Fischer (ASN: US-51828034), United States Army, for heroism on 23 November 1967 while serving with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Private First Class Fischer was serving as an observer and grenadier on an armored cavalry assault vehicle at a night defensive position in the dense jungle area north of Chon Thanh. His platoon was providing defense for an infantry unit’s perimeter. At approximately 2315 hours, the friendly camp was subjected to a heavy Viet Cong mortar barrage which was followed by a massive ground attack. The area was soon raked with enemy mortar, recoilless rifle, rocket, and automatic weapons fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private First Class Fischer remained on top of the armored assault vehicle on which he was riding and accurately located enemy positions for the gunner to engage. At the same time, he was placing deadly grenade fire into the hostile rocket and recoilless rifle positions. Although the Viet Cong began to close in on his position, he remained in the open and continued his heavy firing until the insurgents were forced to retreat. His courage and devotion to duty significantly contributed to the defeat of the hostile force. Private First Class Fischer’s actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
