(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chaplain Kenneth J. Herbster, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Chaplain Herbster distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a Chaplain in the 9th Infantry Division, during an amphibious operation on 4 December 1967. Chaplain Herbster exposed himself with complete disregard for his own safety for more than six hours to give aid and comfort to the wounded and dying. His actions in the evacuation of the wounded provided for their minimal exposure to enemy fire, and as a direct result of his actions an untold number of lives were saved and additional casualties were prevented. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Herbster, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Navy.
