The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Curtis R. Kimes (ASN: US-56702847), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 52d Infantry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Kimes distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action during the period 8 May 1968 to 9 May 1968, while serving as a team member of a reconnaissance patrol during a combat mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit made contact with a large enemy force, one man was immediately wounded. Specialist Kimes and a comrade dragged the man to a rescue area, but the helicopter was unable to land when enemy fire was directed at it. As enemy fire wounded other members of the unit, Specialist Fourth Class Kimes gave them first aid and helped them evade the enemy until a rescue aircraft was able to evacuate them. His gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
