The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V:” to Sergeant Logan Randall Combs, United States Army, for conspicuous valor in action while serving as a Rifle Squad Leader in 1st Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2d Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. Sergeant Combs led a group of volunteer Soldiers in a counterattack against a heavily armed enemy dismounted attack that had breached the outer perimeter wall of Forward Operating Base (FOB) Pasab, on 20 January 2014, in Zharay District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. When the FOB was struck by a large vehicle borne improvised explosive device, Sergeant Combs was near his living tent approximately 400 meters away. Hearing small arms fire, Sergeant Combs, on his own accord, began moving quickly towards it calling out for others top follow him. Four additional Soldiers from across 1st Platoon, Company A, joined him. En route to the breach site, Sergeant Combs was informed that an unknown number of heavily armed enemy dismounts had entered the FOR near the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air strip. Without stopping, Sergeant Combs led his team of Soldiers forward towards the suspected enemy, and immediately came upon two U.S. casualties from the UAV platoon, one who was assessed by Sergeant Combs to be killed in action, and one who s wounded, Staff Sergeant Jones. While assessing and treating the casualties, the group was engaged with AK-47 fire from two enemy in a covered position less than ten meters from their location. With no thought to his own safety, Sergeant Combs stood to take aim, exposing himself to additional enemy fire, engaged the attackers with suppressive fire from his M4 carbine rifle and wounded one of the two enemy. Sergeant Combs then, along with Staff Sergeant Ellis, puled Staff Sergeant Jones to a safe position behind cover while enduring additional fire from the enemy. Sergeant Combs continued to personally engage the enemy and direct the fires of the team, until the mounted Quick Reaction Force (QRF) arrived and the last of the enemy attackers were killed. Sergeant Combs’ exemplary leadership and valor by assembling and leading a team of Soldiers that re-gained the initiative the enemy and defeated their attack are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
