The Liberator Bomber piloted by First Lieutenant Francis McDowell was shot down on a mission in July 1943, and all ten members of the crew were listed as missing in action. The wreckage, however, was eventually located in May 1972. Seven members of the crew were awarded posthumous Silver Stars for their actions on this mission.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Eugene H. Allen (ASN: 34260920), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as an Aerial Gunner of a B-24 Liberator Bomber of the 51st Bombardment Squadron, 380th Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations while participating in a bombing mission against enemy targets at Babo, New Guinea, in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, on 10 July 1943. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Allen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
