Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 188 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Judson Hurd (ASN: 12037717), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Thuvu bay in the Fiji Islands on March 8, 1943. On this date Corporal Hurd effected the rescue of a fellow soldier from drowning. His feat, one of courage and daring, was accomplished without regard for his personal safety and the hazards which threatened him. Observing the soldier being carried away by a strong undertow 500 feet from shore, Corporal Hurd swam through treacherous currents to reach him and brought him back safely to shore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Corporal Hurd reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
