The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fifth Grade Leonard J. Canter (ASN: 20506837), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Thuvu Bay in the Fiji Islands on March 8, 1943. On this date Corporal Canter saved a fellow soldier from drowning. His feat, one of courage and daring, was accomplished without regard for his personal safety and the hazards which threatened him. Observing the soldier struggling in the water about 00 feet from short Corporal Canter swam through strong, treacherous undercurrents to the man, calmed him and brought him back safely to shore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Corporal Canter reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
