The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Gerald L. Wilch (ASN: 35015189), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Quartermaster Company, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Kokorana, Solomon Islands on 7 August 1943. Sergeant Wilch courageously assisted in extinguishing a burning case of ammunition while the island was still being harassed by enemy dive bombers. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Wilch reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
