The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] William Richard Werner, United States Navy, for meritorious service as Torpedo Data Computer Operator for the U.S.S. PLAICE, during the Second War Patrol of that vessel in enemy controlled waers, from 17 August to 12 October 1944. Skilled and tireless in the performance of duty, Lieutenant Commander Werner endered valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting successful torpedo attacks, which resulted in the sinking of a 10,000-ton transport and itsd 600-tone escort, and inflicting serious damage on a 29,300-ton battleship and a 7100-ton converted cruiser. By his courage and seamanship, Lieutenant Commander Werner contributed materially to the success of his vessel in the face of strong enemy countermeasures and his devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
