    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant James B. Griffin, United States Marine Corps, for meritorious achievement while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, FIFTH Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Parry Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Group, on 22 February 1944. Leading his men to the deepest position of the battalion front, Sergeant Griffin destroyed a group of enemy mortar men and eliminated this source of fire to our rear areas. His devotion to duty throughout this period of heavy fighting was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. [Sergeant Griffin is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.]

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant James B. Griffin, United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, FIFTH Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Marianas Islands, on 24 July 1944. Voluntarily entering an area from which his company had been ordered withdrawn, Sergeant Griffin braved severe enemy shelling to assist in the evacuation of casualties. By his courage and initiative, he saved the lives of his comrades and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. [Sergeant Griffin is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.]
