The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Master Sergeant Michael Thomas Reilly, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at the intersection of Baseline Road and 76th Street, Mesa, Arizona, on 22 January 1984. On that date, Sergeant Reilly observed an accident which involved two automobiles. Both vehicles were totally engulfed in flames and approximately six spectators stood by frozen into inactivity. With complete disregard for his own personal safety and despite the danger of an imminent explosion, Sergeant Reilly forced open the door of one burning vehicle and freed an individual who was unable to extricate himself from the wreckage. Sergeant Reilly then pulled the semiconscious victim to a place of safety. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Reilly reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
