The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander Theron Benton Calkin, United States Navy, for meritorious service in connection with operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force in the Mekong Delta region of the Republic of Vietnam from 2 December 1967 to 24 October 1968. While serving as Executive Officer during the first half of his tour and Officer-in-Charge during the second, Lieutenant Commander Calkin distinguished himself by exceptional leadership and administrative prowess while attached to Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron THREE, Detachment FIVE. Throughout his tour he was faced with the combined challenge of frequent relocations of the detachment and a series of demanding operational commitments. He conducted over 300 combat missions including significant efforts during the TET offensive period in defense of Ben Tre city. In catering to the numerous complexities of relocation, Lieutenant Commander Calkin affected smooth transitions by insuring the availability or procurement of requisite facilities and the safe transportation of equipment, supplies, and records. Lieutenant Commander Calkin’s devotion to duty, demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
