The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Laurent Lee Gourley (AFSN: FR-3195059), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as an F-100 Fighter Pilot with the 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 31st Tactical Fighter Wing, in action against an armed enemy during a reconnaissance mission over Laos, on 18 July 1969. On that date, Captain Gourley, flying as an F-100F Pilot and Forward Air Controller, located and attacked a hostile truck loaded with suppliers. Although intense ground fire was directed at his aircraft, he repeatedly exposed himself to fulfill his mission. His unwavering calmness and courage in the face of graver personal danger are a tribute to his high professional standards. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Gourley has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
