The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Private First Class Willie Dee Tyler (ASN: 3813700), United States Army, for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy at Antipolo, Luzon Island, Philippine Islands, on 10 March 1945. Private Tyler, a rifleman, was moving forward with his platoon in an attack against a Japanese held stronghold when intense knee mortar fire was encountered and his squad leader was seriously wounded. No aid men were available. With utter disregard for his own safety Private Tyler unhesitatingly crawled forward from his cover to the exposed position and administered first aid to the wounded man. While treating his patient he was struck and mortally wounded by enemy fire. By his prompt and courageous action at the expense of his own life he was directly responsible for the ultimate recovery of the wounded man. Private Tyler’s brave act in trying to save the life of a comrade even in the face of death was an inspiration to all who witnessed it.
