    Staff Sergeant

    Action Date:

    March 1, 1977

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Randy L. George, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States. Staff Sergeant George distinguished himself by significant heroism in a non-combat situation at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, on 1 March 1977. Staff Sergeant George demonstrated courage and quick thinking during hand grenade training. After a trainee pulled the pin on a live hand grenade, he dropped the fully-armed grenade and it rolled between his feet. The trainee froze and, with complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant George grabbed the trainee and bodily threw him over the safety wall. Only then did Staff Sergeant George jump to safety over the same wall. Staff Sergeant George’s courage, presence of mind, and truly professional behavior in this split second situation saved the life of a trainee. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Staff Sergeant George reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
