The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Lieutenant Richard Henry Erlewine, United States Navy, for meritorious service while serving as Combat Information Center Officer on board the U.S.S. QUINCY (CA-71), during operations against the enemy in the European and Japanese waters from 6 June 1944 to 27 May 1945. Displaying exceptional foresight, professional ability and meticulous attention to detail in organizing the CIC personnel of his ship prior to commissioning, Lieutenant Erlewine expertly supervised and coordinated their training to meet the exacting demands required in carrying out offensive operations with a Fast Carrier Task Force. An outstanding leader, he contributed materially to the smooth functioning of his unit and to the successful performance of the QUINCY during the invasion of Normandy, the bombardment of Cherbourg, the invasion of Southern France, the bombardment of the Toulon-Marseille Area, and during combat operations off Okinawa and Kyushu. His tireless efforts and inspiring devotion to duty were essential factors in the success of the QUINCY’s mission and reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
