The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Philip Schuyler Grant (ASN: 0-26837), United States Army, for heroic achievement while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 66th Infantry Regiment, 71st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 May 1945, in the vicinity of Ried, Austria. During the attack on Ried, Lieutenant Grant demonstrated exceptional skill, leadership, and coolness under fire. Lieutenant Grant organized a patrol from Company Headquarters personnel and attacked the right flank of the enemy’s well-defended position. Moving across open terrain which offered little or no cover, the patrol hastily spread out into three groups. Lieutenant Grant, without regard for his personal safety, moved swiftly through the hostile fire, surrounded an enemy strong point, and, after a brief fire fight in which two enemy were killed and two others seriously wounded, succeeded in capturing thirty-one German soldiers. As a direct result of this action the battalion was able to continue its advance. Lieutenan Grant’s courage under fire is an inspiration to all.
