The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Walter D. Black, III (AFSN: FR-62346), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52 Aircraft Commander, 4133d Bombardment Wing (Provisional), Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, on 29 January 1968. On this date, Major Black flew a critical mission over the Mu Gia Pass in support of United States Forces at the besieged outpost of Khe Sanh. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Black reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
