The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Electrician’s Mate Second Class Mark Rodger Newfield, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Fleet Composite Squadron THREE, Detachment “A”, San Clemente Island, California, on 9 July 1976. Upon hearing the cries of a shipmate who had been washed into the water at Seal Cove and was being swept out into the ocean, Petty Officer Newfield, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly plunged into the cold and rough waters and effected the rescue of the man. His courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risks undoubtedly saved his fellow shipmate from drowning; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
