The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Raymond Harrison (ASN: 6894492), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action at Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. When a landing craft was struck by an enemy bomb and set afire during unloading operations at a beach, Sergeant Harrison disregarded the constant explosion of ammunition and gasoline supplies and assisted in rescue efforts. Risking his own life, he repeatedly entered the water alongside the burning ship and helped evacuate the wounded survivors. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Staff Sergeant Harrison reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
