Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (December 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Daniel D. Semonuk (ASN: 36161262), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action at Sicily, on 10 July 1943. After having successfully reached shore during landing operations, Private Semonuk observed two men struggling in the treacherous sea and on the verge of drowning. Without hesitation, he fearlessly plunged into the heavy surf, swam to the aid of these men, and assisted them to shore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private First Class Semonuk reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
