The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Chaplain) James E. McEvoy (ASN: 0-403083), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action at Sicily, on 10 July 1943. After having safely reached shore during landing operations, Chaplain McEvoy observed a soldier struggling in the treacherous surf and on the verge of drowning. He immediately plunged into the rough sea, swam to the helpless man’s side, and assisted him to safety. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Chaplain McEvoy reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
