Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (December 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Elmer Olson (ASN: 0-885736), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action at Sicily on 10 July 1943. After safely reaching shore during landing operations, Lieutenant Olson observed a number of men drowning in the heavy sea. He repeatedly plunged into the treacherous surf, swam to the helpless men, and succeeded in assisting three of them to shore. While assisting a fourth man, Lieutenant Olson lost his life. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Lieutenant Olson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
