The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class James T. Godwin (ASN: 34034107), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with while serving with the 1st Quartermaster Company, 1st Infantry Division, in action in Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. When a ship loaded with vehicles, gasoline, and ammunition was burning fiercely after having been bombed by enemy aircraft, Private First Class Godwin, despite the grave danger involved, made several trips with his amphibious vehicle to the ship and rescued the personnel aboard. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private First Class Godwin reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
