Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 51 (September 25, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Emmers L. Griffin (ASN: 7006916), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through November 1943. When a fellow soldier had fallen on a 2,200 volt electric trolley rail and was suffering severe burns and shock, Private Griffin, without consideration for his own safety, pulled the dying man from this position and thereby saved his life. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private Griffin reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
