The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John A. Genua (ASN: 0-1310593), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in North Africa and Sicily during the period from April through August 1943. When a camouflage net covering a truck loaded with highly explosive ammunition had caught fire, Lieutenant Genua disregarded the danger involved, jumped on the truck, and extinguished the flames. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Lieutenant Genua reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
