The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Josef Gasper (ASN: 6798784), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery A, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action at Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. When a fellow soldier became exhausted while swimming ashore in a heavy surf, Sergeant Gasper, although burdened with cumbersome equipment, proceeded to the drowning man’s aid and successfully brought him to shore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Gasper reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
