Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 55 (October 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John D. Hamilton (ASN: 0-1296025), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. During an attack on an important enemy strongpoint, Lieutenant Hamilton scored available cover and remained in an exposed position where he could better lead his men to their objective. His exceptional courage, keen tactical judgment, and outstanding leadership are deserving of the highest praise. Lieutenant Hamilton’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
