    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private James F. McKnight (ASN: 33405663), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action at Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. After making an exhausting swim to shore during landing operations, Private McKnight saw two of his comrades in great difficulty and on the point of drowning. Displaying dauntless courage, Private McKnight plunged int o the water, when to their aid, and succeeded in bringing them to shore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private McKnight reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
