Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 47 (September 17, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Robert Keen (ASN: 6955061), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in Sicily on or about 10 July 1943. After having made an exhausting swim to shore through heavy surf, Private Keen plunged back int o the water, swam to the aid of several soldiers near collapse and assisted them to a guide line. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private First Class Keen reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
