Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 19 (April 23, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Andrew J. Farkas (ASN: 35254597), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. Although other personnel of his battery had been forced to withdraw from their gun positions due to an enemy tank and artillery barrage, Private Farkas, a switchboard operator, remained at his post, keeping the only remaining communications open during the entire attack. Private Farkas’ courageous act was an inspiration to the officers and men of his battery. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
