The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald Megrail (ASN: 0-460577), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 18 February 1943. While leading a night raid on enemy positions, Lieutenant Megrail personally attacked several enemy positions under heavy fire. His superior leadership and excellent coordination of this raid, although at the cost of his life, resulted in the complete destruction of the enemy force. Lieutenant Megrail’s supreme sacrifice displayed the highest traditions of the Military Service.
