Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 18 (April 20, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private James T. Harmon (ASN: 20429297), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. When enemy infantry forced the withdrawal of his battery, Private Harmon, a radio operator, voluntarily endeavored to remove a four-ton prime mover under heavy enemy artillery fire. During this attempted evacuation, the vehicle was set fire and Private Harmon was wounded by a direct hit. His courage and devotion to duty inspired his fellow soldiers and exemplified the highest traditions of the Military Service.
