Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 18 (April 20, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Frederick L. Miller (ASN: 6980301), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. Although greatly outnumbered by the enemy, Sergeant Miller and another enlisted man advanced with their commanding officer on an enemy machine gun nest. Coming under direct fire, Sergeant Miller covered the advance of his commanding Officer, aiding materially in the capture of one officer and seventeen men of the enemy force. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
