The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William H. Seitz, Jr. (ASN: 0-358442), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. Discovering an enemy machine gun nest on his company’s flank, Captain Seitz, with the aid of two enlisted men, proceeded toward this position. Encountering direct fire from the enemy gun, Captain Seitz ordered his men to cover his advance, continued on to the objective, and captured one officer and seventeen men. His courage and sound tactical judgment inspired his fellow officers and men. Captain Seitz’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
