Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 17 (April 14, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Harvey L. Launer (ASN: 6990915), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Ranger Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. Sergeant Launer, Radio Operator of a motor patrol subjected to intense enemy fire, assisted his commanding officer in directing heavy and accurate artillery fire against a large group of advancing enemy tanks, forcing them to withdraw after several had been destroyed. He continued to assist his commanding officer until his radio was destroyed and he was severely wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
