Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 11 (March 28, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edwin S. Bancroft (ASN: 12017233), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. Corporal Bancroft covered the withdrawal of his platoon with a machine gun, remaining at his post even though the enemy concentrated heavy fire on his position. When the enemy succeeded in disabling the weapon, Private Bancroft and his gunner, heroically disregarding heavy enemy machine gun and rifle grenade fire, carried the gun to a place of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
