Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 11 (March 28, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Philip E. Guter (ASN: 20243983), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, in 1943. In an attempt to rescue six men of his troop caught in an enemy trap, Sergeant Guter calmly faced heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire, and remained for many hours after nightfall deep in enemy territory in a futile search of the area for these men. To prevent the enemy’s capture with a machine gun, Sergeant Guter calmly carried it, in addition to the submachine gun with which he was armed, for a distance of four miles back to friendly troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
